Miraflor natural reserve has a total area of 13,174 ha and is located in northern Nicaragua, in the town of Esteli, about 25 km. from the city of Esteli. The full name is Miraflor-Moropotente because in reality are two different protected areas which by sharing limits are managed as one.
The reserve Miraflor has several natural values: different forests, historical sites and an impressive wealth of flora (including orchids) and fauna. The climate, because the altitude is a bit cooler compared with other places in Nicaragua, so we recommend to bring warm clothing.
Visitors have the chance to see species of tropical birds such as the Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) or Trogónes (Trogonidae family). In the reserve also live felines, a species of primates, the Mono Congo (Alouatta palliata), snakes, rabbits, and a wide variety of insects still unknown.
The reserve of Miraflor is divided in three zones:
This area represents 47% of all territory, including heights between 1350 and 1480 meter above sea level, with an annual temperature average between 18 and 20 ° C and a range of rainfall varies between 1200 and 1600 mm per year. In this part of the reserve is a forested area considered the the largest in the region of Las Segovias.
Among the attractions in this area we can find the orchids, lab where the coffee that grown on the reserve is tasted, as well as waterfalls and Miraflor´s lagoon.
Located 25 km. from the city of Estelí, this area represents 25% of the reserve contains heights between 1300 and 1500 meters above sea level with an annual temperature average between 20 and 25 ° C and with a range of rainfall ranging from 800 to 1200mm/year.
It has a diversity of species of birds and tropical forests and forests of pine and oak, also in this area are indigenous caves built in the colonial period and the poza la Pila and poza azul, whose crystal clear waters came from the mountains of the reserve.
The lower area of Miraflor is just 14 kilometers from Estelí, this area represents 28% of the reserve, contains heights between 900 and 1100 meters above sea level, with an annual temperature average between 20 and 24 ° C and with a range of rainfall between 1200 and 1400 mm per year, with a period of 5 months of summer (January to May) with no rain.
On this area is the river Estelí, where you can enjoy rustic fishing and enjoy the pools that exist throughout the river.
